EVs went from 15% to nearly 20% of Assam’s new car sales in just three months

In just three months, electric vehicles went from making up roughly one in six new vehicle registrations in Assam to nearly one in five. Figures shared by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma show electric vehicles accounted for 15.7% of all new vehicle registrations in April, rising to 19.4% in May and 19.6% in June.

“Over the past three months, Assam has recorded close to 20% EV penetration in new vehicle registrations, reflecting the state’s strong push towards green mobility through improved charging infrastructure, affordable tariffs, reliable power and supportive policies,” Sarma wrote on X, attributing the growth to the state’s expanding EV charging network alongside reliable power supply and supportive government policy.

The rapid climb comes as Assam’s broader automobile market has been losing momentum. After a 26.6% surge in new vehicle registrations across all fuel types in 2023, the state’s overall market declined by 3.6% in 2024 and a further 5.4% in 2025. Even so, the share of electric vehicles kept rising, suggesting a genuine shift in consumer preference rather than simply reflecting overall market growth.

Sarma said the shift aligns with the nation’s broader push for EV adoption and would help lower crude oil imports, improve environmental outcomes, and let middle-class families save on daily expenses, positioning Assam as a leader in clean transportation in India’s northeast.
