Uttar Pradesh’s speeding problem meets its match: an AI that never blinks

Uttar Pradesh’s speeding drivers have a new problem, and it doesn’t get tired, distracted or argued with: AI-based interceptor vehicles that the Lucknow police commissionerate says have already issued 16,347 e-challans in a three-month trial.

The rollout makes Lucknow the first city in Uttar Pradesh to deploy this kind of automated speed enforcement, according to officials, who confirmed the trial period has run for the past three months.

Each vehicle combines AI-based speed detection, high-resolution cameras, automatic video recording and digital evidence capture into a single integrated e-challan platform, allowing it to catch a violation, document it and issue the ticket with little need for an officer to step in.

‘The system automatically detects speeding and other serious traffic violations, captures photographic and video evidence, and generates digital challans with minimal human intervention, ensuring transparency and reducing the possibility of disputes,’ said DCP traffic Raveena Tyagi.

Beyond speeding, the interceptors are also catching reckless driving, stunt-biking and the use of illegal pressure horns — violations officials say are common contributors to road accidents in the city.
