The Indian startup that makes drinking water out of humid air just got a global backer

An Indian startup that builds machines capable of extracting drinking water from the air has landed a high-profile international backer. Maithri Aquatech Private Limited, based in Hyderabad, has secured a strategic equity investment from DP World, the Dubai-based global logistics and supply chain operator, which has picked up a 14% stake in the company for an undisclosed sum.

The company’s technology, branded ‘Meghdoot’, generates potable water from atmospheric humidity, reducing dependence on conventional water sources and infrastructure. Maithri Aquatech said the investment will help it pilot these systems in real-world operating environments across varied geographies, including logistics and industrial settings.

Ramkrishna Mukkavilli, founder and managing director of Maithri Aquatech, said the deal reflects shared priorities between the two companies: “The strategic investment of DP World reflects a shared belief that water security is not a peripheral challenge — it is central to the resilience of global trade, communities and ecosystems.”

The deal also highlights the growing India-UAE collaboration in sustainability, trade and innovation, with Maithri’s headquarters, production and R&D operations based in Hyderabad.
