Viral Reddit thread on AI layoffs splits developersIndia over ‘fake or real’

A Reddit post claiming AI-driven mass layoffs at an Indian firm has split commenters between believers and sceptics calling it fake.

A Reddit post on r/developersIndia claiming a services company laid off nearly its entire developer team and credited the AI model “Claude Fable 5” has split the community, with over 1,100 upvotes alongside a wave of comments questioning whether the story is real.

“This seems fake to me,” wrote one top commenter, arguing that Fable 5’s usage costs had not even been fully assessed yet for a company to base firing decisions on it. Another user called it “bunch of bot accounts fear mongering,” while a third flatly wrote: “Yep, 100% a fake post.”

The original poster pushed back on the scepticism, writing: “I don’t gain anything from spreading FUD about technology that threatens my livelihood,” and said the company was already low on projects before the AI-linked layoffs.

Several commenters sided with the poster’s own detail that “the number of projects drastically reduced” as the more likely explanation than AI capability, with one writing that blaming AI is “management speak for a good PR excuse for downsizing.”
