Why did he stay 8 years? Arizona forest mystery finally reaches a courtroom

For eight years, a man lived on public land in Arizona’s Tonto National Forest without permission, and even after his case reached a federal courtroom, no one has explained why.

Court records identify him as Mark Aaron Gatz, 65, who has pleaded guilty to unlawfully residing in the forest and to violating federal fire restrictions. He told officers he had spent the last two years at the specific site where he was arrested, after living in the forest’s broader Payson Pine area for years before settling there.

U.S. Forest Service officers say they returned to the same remote location repeatedly, issuing warnings, citations and orders to clean up what had become an increasingly sprawling illegal camp. Those repeated instructions did not stop the site from growing.

When officers inspected the camp, they found discarded clothing, tools, old tires, plastic bags, aluminum cans, containers of used motor oil and multiple makeshift structures, adding up to an estimated 1,000 pounds of trash across roughly half an acre of protected forest land.

Gatz also racked up six outstanding federal warrants for earlier violations. During a June 25 visit, officers found him tending an active wood-burning fire despite Stage 2 fire restrictions being in effect; he said he needed it to cook food. Federal rules typically limit camping in national forests to 14 days within any 30-day period.

Authorities had considered pursuing thousands of dollars in restitution for the environmental damage but ultimately closed the case without requiring it. Gatz was sentenced to time served and three years of probation, and court filings still do not say whether homelessness, personal choice or some other factor kept him in the forest for so long.
