CBSE, ICSE or IGCSE: neither board is ‘better’, experts say — here’s how they differ

Is IGCSE better than CBSE or ICSE? Not really — each board has its own strength, and the right choice depends more on a child’s learning style than on which curriculum looks more impressive on paper.

CBSE remains one of the strongest choices for students targeting competitive exams like JEE and NEET, since its syllabus stays close to NCERT. ICSE has long been appreciated for its focus on English and detailed coverage of subjects. IGCSE, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education, tends to suit children who like to ask questions, learn through projects, explore different subjects and may want to study abroad in the future.

The curriculum is followed in schools across more than 160 countries, and Cambridge programmes have been steadily growing in Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Its assessment structure also differs from the traditional single-exam model: exams count for 60 percent of the grade, coursework for 25 percent and practicals for 15 percent, spreading a student’s performance across the year rather than resting it all on one paper.

Cost remains the biggest practical differentiator. IGCSE schools in cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru charge annual fees of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 14 lakh depending on the grade and facilities, compared with CBSE and ICSE schools that can range from a few thousand rupees to a few lakhs a year — a gap that, for many families, matters more than any curriculum difference.
